Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn supports the Seattle P.E.A.C.E. CENTER!

Michael “Mike” Patrick McGinn (born December 17, 1959) is the mayor of Seattle, a lawyer, Greenwood neighborhood activist, and a former Sierra Club state chair.

In what was characterized as a “sea change in the power structure of Seattle”, McGinn differentiated his campaign by his opposition to the proposed tunnel replacement to the Alaskan Way Viaduct. He won election in November 2009 with the support of groups considered to be “political outsiders” such as environmentalists, biking advocates, musicians, advocates for the poor, nightclub owners, and younger voters.

Spying on Occupy: Prosecutors Subpoena Tweets, NYPD Arrests Protesters for ‘Thought Crimes’

Several stories in the news this week – and it’s only Tuesday – reveal the scope of the spying and surveillance activities of the NYPD and DA’s office, who are monitoring Occupy Wall Street.

Taken individually, these stories may not seem earth-shattering. Yes, the NYPD was monitoring Occupy, but the NYPD is sort of legendary for its overzealous spy and harassment programs (just ask any Muslim New Yorker or victim of the Stop and Frisk policy). Tiken Jah Fakoly is a reggae artist born in Cote d’Ivoire in Western Africa. His career began in the 1990’s and he has released seven albums most recently “L’Africain.” He sings both in French and in his native language of Dioula.

As a result of his outspoken criticism of the government in his native country, Tiken (as he is known to his fans) has been the target of intimidation and death threats. He has lost several people close to him but he remains an advocate both for reform of the political system in Cote d’Ivoire and for the plight of disadvantaged people in Africa and throughout the world. He was forced into exile in neighbouring Mali and now spends time in France as well.

Henok Tesfaye: An Ethiopian American entrepreneurial success

It is widely believed that the “American dream” is easily attainable by anyone in the US.
